General

Does this replace the MSC-4/MSC-4-8.5?

Yes, it is a direct replacement for the MSC-4/MSC-4-8.5.

What is the variable stage rating?

12.5 A at 120/230 VAC, general-purpose (resistive)
9 FLA at 120/230 VAC, PSC motor
1/2 HP at 120 VAC, 1 HP at 230 VAC, PSC motor
1500 W tungsten at 120 VAC

Does this control use a temperature sensor?

No. The control is manual and adjusts output using the knob on the front.

How many fans can it control?

The limiting factor is the variable stage rating. Add up the current draw of the fans you want to control and compare it to the variable stage rating. If the combined fans draw less than the variable stage rating, then you can control them.

Can it control lights?

Yes. This control can be used as a light dimmer for brooder heat lamps and control up to five 250-watt lamps.

How big is the control?

The enclosure is 4.75 x 7.80 x 3.75 in. (12 x 15.6 x 9.5 cm). The switch and knob add an additional 0.75 in. (1.9 cm) to the depth.

Installation

Does it matter which wire I attach to the power and which I attach to the fan?

Wire the control as shown in the user manual.

Troubleshooting

Why does the fan growl when I turn the knob all the way down?

If you want the fan to idle you need to increase the Low Limit trimmer. If you want the fan to be off you need to decrease the Low Limit trimmer. For more information, see Limits for 120/230 VAC fans in the user manual.

Why does my fan not run at full speed when I turn the knob all the way up?

You may need to increase the High Limit trimmer. For more information, see Limits for 120/230 VAC fans in the user manual.
